Marva Collins was born in 1936 in Monroe, Louisiana. She was the youngest of 11 children, and her family was very poor. Collins' parents were sharecroppers, and they worked long hours in the fields to make ends meet. Despite their poverty, Collins' parents were determined to give their children a good education. They sent her to the local Catholic school, where she excelled in her studies.

After graduating from high school, Collins moved to Chicago to attend college. She earned a degree in elementary education from Chicago Teachers College, and then she began her teaching career. Collins taught in some of the most challenging schools in Chicago, but she never gave up on her students. She believed that all children could learn, and she was determined to find ways to reach every child.
