  • Use enough rode to allow your boat to swing freely with the tide and current.

  • Use a snubber to reduce the strain on your anchor rode.
  • Check your anchor regularly to make sure it is holding.

Docking

  • Approach the dock slowly and carefully.
  • Use fenders to protect your boat from damage.
  • Tie your boat securely to the dock cleats.
  • Leave enough room between your boat and the next boat so that you can move around safely.
  • Be aware of the wind and current when docking.

Weather

  • Be aware of the signs of approaching storms.
  • If you are caught in a storm, seek shelter immediately.
  • Wear a life jacket at all times when you are on the water.
  • Have a float plan and let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.

Emergencies

  • Stay calm and assess the situation.
  • Call for help immediately.
  • Use your emergency equipment, such as flares, a whistle, and a life raft.
  • Abandon ship if necessary.
  • Follow the instructions of the Coast Guard or other emergency responders.

Other

  • Always wear a life jacket when you are on the water.
  • Have a float plan and let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
