Ben Hogan: The Favorite

Ben Hogan was the heavy favorite to win the 1955 U.S. Open. He was the reigning champion, having won the previous two editions of the tournament. He was also one of the most successful golfers of all time, with nine major championships to his name.

Hogan was known for his precise iron play and his ability to hit the ball long and straight. He was also a fierce competitor, and he was determined to win his third consecutive U.S. Open.

Jack Fleck: The Underdog

Jack Fleck was a relatively unknown golfer in 1955. He had only one PGA Tour victory to his name, and he had never finished in the top 10 at a major championship.

Fleck was a long hitter, but he was not as accurate as Hogan. He was also not as experienced as Hogan, and he had never played in a major championship before.

The Duel at Oakmont

The 1955 U.S. Open was played at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. Oakmont is one of the most difficult golf courses in the world, and it was a daunting test for both Hogan and Fleck.

Hogan and Fleck were paired together in the final round, and they played a thrilling duel. Hogan shot a 67, while Fleck shot a 69. Fleck's round included a birdie on the 18th hole, which gave him a one-stroke victory over Hogan.

The Greatest Upset

Fleck's victory over Hogan is considered one of the greatest upsets in pro golf history. It was a stunning triumph for an underdog, and it proved that anything is possible in golf.
