Kara Goucher: The Last Deer Hunter

Kara Goucher is a retired American distance runner who specialized in the marathon and half marathon. She was the 2007 Pan American Games champion in the 10,000 meters, and represented the United States at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics.

Early life and career

Goucher was born in Duluth, Minnesota, on December 9, 1978. She began running at the age of 12, and attended Stanford University, where she was a three-time All-American. She graduated from Stanford in 2001 with a degree in human biology.

Goucher made her international debut at the 2003 Pan American Games, where she finished fourth in the 5000 meters. She competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, where she finished 15th in the 5000 meters.

Professional career

Goucher turned professional after the 2004 Olympics and signed with Nike. She won her first major title at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she won the 10,000 meters in a time of 31:51.73.

Goucher made her marathon debut at the 2008 Boston Marathon, where she finished second in a time of 2:25:37. She competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, where she finished fifth in the 5000 meters.

Goucher won the 2009 ING New York City Marathon in a time of 2:25:37. She became the first American woman to win the New York City Marathon since Deena Kastor in 2005.

Goucher competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England, where she finished 10th in the 10,000 meters.

Goucher announced her retirement from competitive running in 2014.

Personal life

Goucher is married to Adam Goucher, a former American distance runner. They have two children.

Goucher is an advocate for animal welfare and is a member of the board of directors for the Humane Society of the United States.
