Robert Tyre Jones Jr. was born on March 17, 1902, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was the youngest of five children born to Robert Tyre Jones Sr., a successful businessman, and Clara Bell Jones. Jones began playing golf at the age of six, and by the time he was 10, he was shooting in the 70s. In 1916, Jones won the Georgia State Amateur Championship. The following year, he won the Southern Amateur Championship. In 1919, Jones won the U.S. Amateur Championship. He was the youngest player to ever win the U.S. Amateur, and he remains the only player to have won the U.S. Amateur four times.
